For 14 seasons, Blue Bloods welcomed viewers to the Reagan family dinner table, where the cast’s chemistry made them feel like a genuine family. According to Donnie Wahlberg, who portrayed Detective Danny Reagan, those close bonds didn’t happen overnight—but they eventually became one of the show’s greatest strengths.
When Wahlberg first met Tom Selleck, who played family patriarch Frank Reagan, he wasn’t convinced audiences would believe they were father and son. Speaking on the Brotherly Love podcast, Wahlberg recalled being intimidated by Selleck’s commanding presence.
“I walked into the room, and he’s like 6’4″. I’m like 5’11”, I think,” Wahlberg joked. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, he’s got so much hair. His eyebrows are so bushy.’ I didn’t even care about the mustache. I was thinking, ‘How am I this guy’s son? They’re going to fire me tomorrow.'”
His concerns quickly faded after meeting Len Cariou, who played Reagan family patriarch Henry Reagan. Cariou’s appearance made the fictional family resemblance seem much more believable.
“Then I met the grandfather, who’s played by Len Cariou, and he’s shorter than me, same hairline,” Wahlberg recalled with a laugh. “I was like, ‘All right, I got his genes. I’m good.'”
That moment eased Wahlberg’s worries, and the cast went on to form one of television’s most beloved on-screen families. Over the course of 14 successful seasons, the chemistry between Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Len Cariou, and the rest of the ensemble became a defining part of Blue Bloods, making the Reagan family dinners an iconic tradition that fans looked forward to every week.
