Tragedy in California: Elderly Couple Found Dead After Woman Was Allegedly Scammed by Someone Impersonating Tom Selleck
A tragic case in California is under investigation after an elderly couple was found dead in what authorities believe may have been a murder-suicide. According to a longtime family friend, the incident followed an online scam in which someone allegedly impersonated actor Tom Selleck to gain the woman’s trust.
Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check at the home of Karen Whitaker, 79, and Donald Whitaker, 80, in Bermuda Dunes on May 15. When they arrived, they found both suffering from traumatic injuries. The couple was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say evidence suggests the deaths may have resulted from a murder-suicide, but investigators have not identified who was responsible. The case remains under active investigation.
Family friend Joy Miedecke told People that Karen had been communicating since the summer of 2025 with someone pretending to be Tom Selleck. The alleged scammer reportedly contacted her through Facebook, using personal information from her profile to build trust.
According to Miedecke, Karen gradually sent the impersonator thousands of dollars. The day before the couple’s deaths, she allegedly asked friends for money, claiming that “Tom Selleck’s manager’s wife had died and he needed financial help.”
“That was the last straw for Donald,” Miedecke said. “He was so embarrassed. He could not believe she would ask her friends to participate in this scam.”
Miedecke believes Karen, who may have been experiencing early-stage dementia, genuinely believed she was communicating with the famous actor despite repeated warnings from friends and family.
“She thought it was really Tom Selleck. Nobody could stop her,” Miedecke said.
After learning about the situation, Donald and the couple’s adult children reportedly restricted Karen’s access to the family’s financial accounts. Miedecke estimates that Karen may have sent at least $30,000 to the scammer.
She also said Donald struggled to cope with the financial losses and had previously confided in friends that he didn’t know how to handle the situation.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths. There is no evidence that Tom Selleck had any involvement in the incident. Investigators believe scammers simply used the actor’s identity as part of an alleged online fraud scheme.
