Tom Selleck Reflects on Blue Bloods Ending: “Nobody Wanted It to End”
More than a year after Blue Bloods aired its final episode on CBS, Tom Selleck is still speaking openly about the show’s cancellation, insisting that the long-running police drama ended while it was still at the top of its game.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Selleck said the cast never wanted the series to end and believes viewers felt the same way.
“Nobody wanted it to end. My biggest goal is to make sure people realize we went out in rather spectacular success,” Selleck said. “The show wasn’t tired. Somebody may be able to tell me someday why CBS wanted to end it, but I haven’t had a good answer yet.”
According to Selleck, the cast was so disappointed by the cancellation that they agreed to significant pay cuts in hopes of securing another season. Although CBS ultimately approved one final season, the network decided to end the series afterward despite its strong ratings and loyal fan base.
Selleck has maintained that Blue Bloods still had plenty of stories left to tell.
“CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it,” he said. “The show’s more popular than ever. We’re certainly not out of ideas. I’m not counting the days so I can do something else. I love the work, and I want to keep working as long as they’ll have me.”
CBS has previously indicated that rising production costs played a significant role in the decision to conclude the series, even though Blue Bloods remained one of the network’s most-watched dramas.
While the original series has ended, the franchise lives on through the spinoff Boston Blue, which follows Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, as he begins a new chapter in Boston.
Wahlberg has also revealed that the new series will continue to bring familiar faces from the Blue Bloods universe back to the screen.
“There were zero Blue Bloods castmates originally in the Boston Blue pilot; now they’re creeping in, and they’ll be coming back,” he said.
Looking ahead, Wahlberg believes the franchise could continue expanding even further.
“In success, this could lead anywhere,” he explained. “It could lead to another Blue Bloods universe show. My dream is that someday we bring Blue Bloods and Boston Blue together for a feature film.”
Although Tom Selleck remains disappointed that Blue Bloods came to an end, the success of Boston Blue offers fans a chance to stay connected to the Reagan family and the world they came to love over 14 seasons.
