Tom Selleck Could Return as Frank Reagan in “Boston Blue” — Donnie Wahlberg Teases a Possible Reunion

Fans hoping to see Tom Selleck return as Frank Reagan in the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue have received a hopeful update from Donnie Wahlberg.

Wahlberg, who portrayed Detective Danny Reagan for 14 seasons on the CBS hit drama before continuing the character’s story in Boston Blue, revealed that Selleck has been supportive of the new series and suggested that a reunion could happen when the timing is right.

“Tom supported me doing Boston Blue,” Wahlberg said during CBS Fest. “When the time is right, I’m sure we’ll find something to do together on the show.”

However, whether Selleck would return as the legendary New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan or take on a different role remains uncertain.

“He may want to play Frank again, or he may not,” Wahlberg explained, adding that any potential appearance would depend on several factors, including timing, the storyline, and most importantly, the script.

So far, Boston Blue has already welcomed familiar faces from the Reagan family. Wahlberg revealed that other Blue Bloods cast members have appeared in the spinoff, including Len Cariou’s Henry “Pop” Reagan, with more surprises possibly on the way.

“It would be lovely to have Tom,” Wahlberg said, while emphasizing that fans will need to be patient. “When the time is right.”

Selleck, known worldwide for roles in Magnum, P.I., Friends, and the Jesse Stone television movies, recently wrapped his long-running role on Blue Bloods after the series ended in 2024. That same year, he released his memoir, You Never Know: A Memoir.

Although the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor has taken a quieter approach to acting recently, his signing with United Talent Agency has fueled speculation that more projects could be ahead.

Whether that next chapter includes a return to the Reagan family remains unknown, but fans are keeping hope alive.

Boston Blue airs Fridays on CBS and has already been renewed for a second season.
