Donnie Wahlberg Reveals His Favorite Blue Bloods Episode—and Why It Still Means So Much
After portraying Detective Danny Reagan across all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods and appearing in nearly 300 episodes, Donnie Wahlberg has experienced countless memorable moments. Yet when asked to choose his favorite episode, the actor doesn’t hesitate—the very first one still stands above the rest.
Speaking on the Boston Blue YouTube channel, Wahlberg reflected on the pilot with genuine appreciation, explaining that it continues to impress him every time he sees it.
“I catch it on reruns from time to time, and it still holds up after all these years,” he said. “Getting to work with Tom Selleck, Bridget Moynahan, and the rest of the cast was an incredible experience. I don’t know if we’ll ever top that first episode. We’ve come close with some amazing stories, but the pilot was something really special.”
The premiere laid the foundation for everything that followed. It introduced viewers to the Reagan family, established the show’s unique blend of police drama and family storytelling, and debuted the iconic Sunday dinner scenes that became a defining feature of the series throughout its successful run.
The Show Almost Never Happened
Despite its long-running success, Blue Bloods came surprisingly close to never making it to television.
In an interview with Variety, Wahlberg recalled that the series was the final pilot CBS approved that development season, and for a time he believed it had been passed over.
He remembered being told just before the network’s annual upfront presentations that the show would not move forward. Then, only days later, everything changed.
At the time, Wahlberg was at sea with New Kids on the Block during one of the band’s fan cruises when he unexpectedly received a call informing him that he needed to return to New York immediately for the CBS upfronts because Blue Bloods had officially been picked up.
The last-minute decision proved to be a turning point. Premiering in 2010, Blue Bloods became one of CBS’s most reliable dramas, earning a loyal audience and remaining on the air for 14 seasons.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
Although Blue Bloods has concluded, Wahlberg’s connection to the franchise continues. He has returned as Danny Reagan in Boston Blue, a series that builds on the world established by Blue Bloods while introducing new stories and characters.
For Wahlberg, however, the original pilot remains unforgettable—a reminder of where the journey began and the episode that started one of television’s most enduring family dramas.
