The End of an Era: Donnie Wahlberg Says Goodbye to the Reagan Family

Tom Selleck Shares Whether He’d Return for Boston Blue After Blue Bloods‘ End

Although Blue Bloods concluded in 2024 after a successful 14-season run, fans are still wondering whether Tom Selleck could reprise his iconic role as Frank Reagan in the franchise’s spinoff, Boston Blue.

In an interview with Hour Detroit published on November 11, the 80-year-old actor addressed the possibility of making an appearance on the new series, which follows Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) as he begins a new chapter in Boston.

Since premiering on October 17, Boston Blue has already welcomed several familiar faces from Blue Bloods, including Marisa Ramirez as Detective Maria Baez and Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan. While Frank Reagan has only been heard during a phone conversation with Danny, many viewers have continued to hope for an on-screen reunion.

Selleck, however, suggested that returning may not be in his plans.

“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue—that’s another show,” he told Hour Detroit. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”

The actor also reflected on CBS’s decision to end Blue Bloods, admitting he remains disappointed by the cancellation.

“It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it,” Selleck said. “If you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television.”

He explained that, during the show’s final episodes, he struggled with the conversation surrounding its conclusion because he believed the series was still performing exceptionally well.

“I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful,” he said.

Selleck argued that the drama consistently delivered strong ratings, regardless of its scheduling.

“If you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you’ve got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.”

Looking back, he suggested the show’s long-running success may have led executives to underestimate its value.

“My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.”

While Selleck hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of revisiting Frank Reagan someday, his comments indicate he’s focused on preserving Blue Bloods’ legacy rather than continuing the role in its successor. Even so, many fans continue to hope that the Reagan family patriarch will eventually make a surprise appearance on Boston Blue.
