Remembering a Beloved Blue Bloods Star as Tributes Flood In

Boston Blue Season 2 Expected to Begin Filming Soon as Fall Return Nears

Although CBS has not officially announced when Boston Blue Season 2 will begin production, filming is expected to get underway soon if the series is to meet its anticipated fall premiere.

According to TV Insider, production will likely start after July 4, working around star Donnie Wahlberg’s schedule with New Kids on the Block. The singer and actor is currently committed to the band’s tour from June 19 through July 4, with another round of concerts scheduled from October 2 to October 17.

The second season is expected to reclaim its familiar Friday at 10/9c timeslot on CBS—the same slot long occupied by Blue Bloods.

Wahlberg, a Boston native, previously admitted that he was thrilled when he was offered the opportunity to headline the spinoff.

“When I got offered the job, I’m like, ‘This is a dream come true.’ I thought, I’ll do a spinoff in L.A. or Vegas or Texas, somewhere hot,” he recalled. “And they were like, ‘How about Boston?’ I was like, ‘Ahhhh.’ They hooked me.”

Despite the show’s Boston setting, most of the series is filmed in Toronto because of production costs. Wahlberg even joked that he offered to give up half of his salary to move filming to Boston, but the idea wasn’t financially possible.

After CBS renewed the series for a second season, Wahlberg personally shared the news with his fellow cast members and his wife, Jenny McCarthy.

“As one of the executive producers, I wanted to be the one to tell everyone,” Wahlberg said. “Every cast member got tears in their eyes, and so did I. When I called Jenny, we shared a nice cry.”

Season 2 will continue exploring Detective Lena Silver’s complicated family story, particularly her relationships with her biological father, Chris, and her newly discovered half-sister, Kristina.

Showrunner Brandon Sonnier said the new season will examine what it means to build relationships that should have existed all along, while also navigating the emotional challenges that come with adding new family members to an already close-knit dynamic.

Co-showrunner Brandon Margolis also hinted that Lena’s search for answers about her past could uncover difficult truths, creating new challenges as her personal and professional lives become increasingly intertwined.

CBS has not yet announced an official premiere date, but fans can expect more details as the anticipated fall debut approaches.
