Donnie Wahlberg is opening up about the decision to recast Sean Reagan for Boston Blue and the emotional conversations that came with continuing the Blue Bloods legacy.
In an interview with Us Weekly, Wahlberg explained that replacing Andrew Terraciano, who originally played Sean Reagan on Blue Bloods, was not an easy choice. He said he reached out to Terraciano before the change was made and praised the actor for handling the situation with professionalism, kindness, and support.
Wahlberg shared that Terraciano, who portrayed Sean throughout the original series, was incredibly gracious during the transition. The two even joked about possible ways Terraciano could return to the franchise in a different role, showing the strong respect and friendship that remained between them.
The original Blue Bloods followed Danny Reagan’s life in New York from 2010 until its conclusion in 2024. When Boston Blue premiered, the story moved Danny to Boston after his son Sean was hospitalized. The spinoff introduced Mika Amonsen as the new actor taking on the role, marking a major change for longtime fans.
Wahlberg admitted that the recasting was one of the biggest challenges he faced when deciding whether to continue the franchise. He questioned how audiences would respond to seeing a different version of a familiar character but ultimately felt confident in Amonsen’s approach.
