The Blue Bloods Family Devastated by the Unexpected Death of a Cast Member

Boston Blue Finale Strengthens Danny and Lena’s Partnership After Emotional Near-Death Ordeal

Warning: Spoilers for the Boston Blue Season 1 finale.

The Season 1 finale of Boston Blue delivered one of its most emotional moments yet as Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) saw their partnership tested like never before.

After Lena was critically wounded in the line of duty, Danny spent hours waiting at the hospital, praying in the chapel while she underwent emergency surgery. His former partner, Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), arrived to offer support during the tense ordeal. When Lena finally regained consciousness, Danny was among the first people she asked to see before sharing an emotional first meeting with her biological father, Chris (Erik King).

Although Lena survived, the finale ended on another cliffhanger. Her boyfriend, Brian (Ryan Broussard), was deliberately struck by another vehicle while driving to the Silver family dinner, sending his car into a river and leaving his fate uncertain heading into Season 2.

Speaking with TV Insider, Martin-Green said the traumatic experience permanently transformed Danny and Lena’s relationship.

She explained that surviving a life-threatening situation together creates an unbreakable bond, comparing their partnership to the “battle buddy” connection shared by military veterans. In her view, the experience strengthened the trust between the detectives in a way nothing else could.

Martin-Green also shared her interpretation of the hospital scenes, saying she imagined Lena’s family had already spent time with her before stepping away, leaving Danny as the person she most needed to see when she opened her eyes. She believes Danny likely divided his time between supporting both the Silver and Reagan families and quietly praying in the hospital chapel.

Beyond the characters’ relationship, Martin-Green said the emotional hospital scene reflected the genuine friendship she and Wahlberg have developed off-screen.

According to the actress, they formed an immediate connection from the moment they met, describing their friendship as natural and deeply genuine. Filming the finale carried extra emotional weight because it marked the end of the show’s first season, making the farewell—though temporary before returning for Season 2—especially meaningful.

Martin-Green praised Wahlberg’s performance in their reunion scene, particularly the moment when Danny tells Lena, “You really put a scare in me, partner.” She said the line perfectly captured the fear, relief, and trust that now define their partnership, illustrating how a near-tragic experience stripped everything down to what truly mattered.

With Season 2 already on the horizon, the finale leaves Danny and Lena’s partnership stronger than ever while setting the stage for new challenges as they continue working together in Boston.
