Did a Boston Blue Star Just Hint at Frank Reagan’s Return?

Could Tom Selleck Return as Frank Reagan? Boston Blue Star Addresses the Rumors

The Reagan family may be moving to Boston, but fans are still hoping to see another familiar face return.

As speculation continues about whether Blue Bloods star Tom Selleck could make a cameo appearance in the spinoff Boston Blue, actor Mika Amonsen is keeping details close to the vest.

Amonsen, who plays Sean Reagan—the grandson of Selleck’s character Frank Reagan—told Page Six that he has never personally met or spoken with Selleck. However, he revealed that conversations about a possible appearance have happened behind the scenes.

“That conversation was definitely there, for sure,” Amonsen teased.

Selleck has previously expressed disappointment over CBS ending Blue Bloods after its 14-season run and has been cautious about whether he would return to the franchise. Still, fans have continued to hope that Frank Reagan could eventually appear in the new series.

“There’s a lot of fans that want to see it happen and there’s speculation,” Amonsen said, while adding that cast members who worked more closely with Selleck, including Donnie Wahlberg, may have more insight.

“I would just be happy he was there,” Amonsen said. “I know how much fans want him to be on the show.”

Continuing the Reagan Legacy

Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and his son Sean (Mika Amonsen) as they begin a new chapter with the Boston Police Department. The series expands the world established by Blue Bloods, which followed the Reagan family from 2010 to 2024.

The original series centered on Frank Reagan, the New York City Police Commissioner played by Selleck, and his family of law enforcement officers, including Danny, who worked as an NYPD detective before relocating to Boston.

Along with Wahlberg and Amonsen, Boston Blue introduces a new setting while continuing the themes of family, duty, and service that defined its predecessor.

Adjusting to a New Role

Amonsen also addressed the transition into the role of Sean Reagan and the reaction from some fans after Andrew Terraciano’s departure from the character.

While there was some backlash online, Amonsen said he didn’t let the criticism affect him—even after Wahlberg warned him about reading fan discussions on Reddit.

“He’d be like, ‘It’s gonna affect you!'” Amonsen recalled. “It doesn’t affect me at all. I’m like, ‘Oh, whatever.’ What can you do?”

He added that the response was also balanced by plenty of positive feedback from viewers.

Amonsen said he has developed a close relationship with Wahlberg both on and off camera, describing the actor as a mentor who has helped guide him through his first experience as a series regular.

“He’s been great to me,” Amonsen said, explaining that working with Wahlberg has been “one giant piece of advice.”

Learning the Challenges of a Police Drama

Starring in a high-action procedural has also come with some physical challenges for Amonsen. Early in production, the actor suffered a wrist injury and a shoulder injury while filming an action sequence.

“My boot came undone and I tripped and really ate it,” he explained. “We’re running, we’re tackling. We’re doing all sorts of stuff, so it’s bound to happen.”

While there is currently no confirmation that Tom Selleck will appear in Boston Blue, Amonsen’s comments have only added to the excitement surrounding a possible Frank Reagan return.
