Mika Amonsen Opens Up About Replacing Sean Reagan in Blue Bloods Spinoff

Mika Amonsen is speaking out for the first time about the backlash he’s faced since stepping into the role of Sean Reagan.

The actor joined CBS’s Boston Blue as the new Sean, replacing Andrew Terraciano, who played the character throughout Blue Bloods. After several weeks on the air, Amonsen is finally addressing the negative reactions surrounding his recasting.

“There’s been some negativity, for sure,” he told Us Weekly. “But when I look under those posts that have the negativity, there’s a lot of fans rallying for Sean and people saying they really enjoyed this character that I’ve created or my version of the character.”

He continued, “They’re really enjoying the show and they love where it’s going in terms of Sean, and that makes me happy.”

He Felt the Pressure And Wanted to Honor Andrew Terraciano

Amonsen admitted that taking over an established role came with significant pressure, especially one fans had watched grow up on screen.

“I definitely felt a ton of pressure at first,” he said. “I felt the pressure to respect an actor before me because I wanted to respect Andrew the best I could. There were even certain visual choices that I made that I wanted to keep, in terms of hair styling and certain ways of being as Sean.”

When he landed the role, everything happened fast. “It was all within about a week, and I was thrown into it very quickly,” he recalled. He binge-watched as much Blue Bloods as possible, focusing on the later seasons to understand who Sean had become as an adult and to study the character’s evolving dynamic with Danny.

Finding the Balance: Respecting the Past While Creating Something New

Amonsen said watching Terraciano’s performance helped him recognize similarities between them.

“I wanted to respect Andrew’s portrayal of Sean as much as I could but also add something to my own version,” he explained. “The showrunners, Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, have given me a lot of freedom to explore that new dynamic with Donnie. Watching Andrew’s performance, I noticed a lot of similarities between us our energy, which is pretty upbeat. That was comforting. I didn’t feel obligated to change that part of me, which helped me make the role my own.”

A New Chapter for Sean and Danny

Ultimately, Amonsen says this version of Sean is exploring territory the original series never touched.

“We’re really just exploring what would have been,” he said. “Of course it’s my own version of the character, but at the same time, we haven’t seen this relationship between Sean and his dad before. He’s coming into this whole new position because, from what I understand, exploring Sean becoming a cop wasn’t something that was on the table before.”
