Tom Selleck recently spoke about the possibility of appearing in Boston Blue, the Blue Bloods spinoff that premiered in 2024 after the original series ended its 14-season run. In an interview with Hour Detroit published on November 11, the 80-year-old actor addressed whether he would consider reprising his iconic role as Frank Reagan.
Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan as he relocates from New York City to Boston. The series has already welcomed several Blue Bloods alumni, including Marisa Ramirez as Maria Baez and Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan. Although Danny has briefly spoken to Frank on the phone, fans have wondered whether Selleck himself might make a cameo.
“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue that’s another show,” Selleck told Hour Detroit. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”
Selleck also commented on the cancellation of Blue Bloods, saying, “It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it. If you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television.”
He previously expressed similar frustration in an October 2024 interview with TV Insider. “I’m kind of frustrated,” he admitted. “During those last eight shows, I didn’t want to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods
I wanted to talk about it still being wildly successful.”
Selleck added that the show’s consistent success may have caused it to be overlooked: “My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.”
