Loyal Blue Bloods fans were stunned when Danny Reagan’s son, Sean, appeared in the new spin-off Boston Blue and not just because the role was recast. Mika Amonsen now plays Sean in place of Andrew Terraciano, but the real shock came when viewers discovered that Sean is suddenly a police officer, despite showing little interest in law enforcement throughout the original series.
In the premiere episode, “Faith and Family,” Sean is already working the beat in Boston with no backstory explaining his drastic career shift. The last time fans saw him on Blue Bloods, he was leaning into his artistic passions, so the jump to joining the police force felt abrupt and out of character.
Making the transition even more jarring, the show barely gives him a chance to establish himself. Within the first fifteen minutes, Sean is critically injured while heroically rescuing civilians from a fire while off duty. Although the moment highlights that he inherited the classic Reagan bravery, he spends the remainder of the episode in a coma leaving fans with even fewer answers about who this new version of Sean is supposed to be.
Fans were quick to voice their frustration online. “They should’ve made him something else a lawyer, journalist, firefighter anything but a cop,” one Reddit user wrote. Another added, “I hoped Sean would follow in his uncle’s footsteps and go to Harvard Law. The reason he and Danny move to Boston is ridiculous.”
With Boston Blue already stirring debate, Mika Amonsen faces an uphill battle winning over longtime viewers
many of whom aren’t convinced they like this older, revamped Sean Reagan or the direction the spin-off is taking.
