Confirmed Boston Blue Is Coming Back for Season 2!

CBS has officially handed out early renewals to both Boston Blue and Sheriff Country, with network president Amy Reisenbach calling the two dramas “instant hits” powered by standout characters, gripping storylines, and exceptional on screen talent.

The early vote of confidence for Boston Blue comes as no surprise. Nielsen data shows the Blue Bloods spin off drawing an impressive 8 million viewers across multiplatform 7 day ratings, with streaming viewership soaring 87% compared to Blue Bloods last fall. The series has also dominated its Friday 10 p.m. slot since debuting.

Star Donnie Wahlberg celebrated the renewal on Instagram, writing, “Brooklyn and Beantown ride again. So thankful to all of our cast, crew and viewers!” CBS echoed the excitement, posting, “It’s official: the dream team is here to stay!” alongside a photo of Wahlberg and co star Sonequa Martin-Green.

Wahlberg, who recently reflected on closing the book on Blue Bloods, said the opportunity to continue Danny Reagan’s journey was impossible to pass up. “I fought tooth and nail to keep it on the air… When I started to look at this as a way to keep the character alive, how do I not do this?” he told CBS News.

Martin-Green also expressed her enthusiasm, telling The Hollywood Reporter that she loves playing a character who feels “grounded, assured and confident,” and appreciates the joy the role brings her.

While the pilot was shot in Boston, production for the full series shifted to Toronto. Wahlberg explained to THR that filming in his hometown was a thrill but also overwhelming, with constant fan attention making long term production there unrealistic.

CBS has yet to reveal a premiere date for Season 2, but anticipation among viewers is already on the rise.
