Boston Blue: Danny Reagan and Maria Baez Open Up About the Future of Their Long Distance Relationship

Danny Reagan isn’t letting distance derail his relationship with Maria Baez even as his demanding new job in Boston threatens to pull them in opposite directions.

In the Friday, Nov. 21 episode of CBS’ Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny and Marisa Ramirez’s Baez finally share their most substantial screen time together on the series so far. The sixth episode offers fans a clearer look at how the couple is balancing love and law enforcement while navigating a long distance relationship.

The hour, which centers on the Boston Police Department’s investigation into a string of increasingly violent home invasions, opens on a more intimate note: Danny and Baez popping champagne in his sparsely furnished new apartment.

“It’s been almost a month since we were together, so yes, I thought we should celebrate,” Danny says, prompting Baez to gently tease him about the lack of furniture.

Their reunion is short-lived. A work call pulls Danny away, forcing them to postpone their plans a familiar frustration for a couple brought together during their days as NYPD partners, whose romance blossomed near the end of Blue Bloods. Now stationed in Boston to be closer to his son Sean, Danny is struggling to make his personal life fit around the job.

“It’s okay if anyone understands the demands of the job, it’s your old partner,” Baez reassures him. Danny promises to make it up to her with lunch in a “beautiful location” and vows to spend the day “staring” into her eyes.

Later, Danny tells his current partner, Lena Silver, that Baez understands the unpredictable schedule. “Don’t feel bad,” he says. “She knows the job. Plus, I sent her some flowers.”

Baez proves him right when she shows up at the station, coffee in hand for both Danny and Lena. She even lends a hand on the case, earning praise from Danny: “You’ve still got it, detective.”

During their rescheduled lunch, Baez admits she’s still adjusting to Danny’s new reality. “I’m getting my head around Brooklyn living in Beantown,” she says.

“I’m not used to this city either,” Danny responds. “When I got the call that Sean was hurt in a fire… Maria, I had to move here.”

Once again, duty interrupts their date. Danny later introduces Baez to Lena, but the visit ends with another difficult goodbye when Baez reveals she has to return to Brooklyn after chasing a lead connected to a homicide.

According to showrunner Kevin Wade Margolis, Baez’s presence in Danny’s life and in Boston is far from over.

“Baez will return multiple times in the first season, and it’s a story we’re going to tell,” Margolis said. “The struggle of moving to a new place and what you leave behind is front and center, and that includes the relationship with Baez, which continues for multiple episodes this season.”
