Heartbreak for Blue Bloods Fans After News About Bridget Moynahan Emerges

The highly anticipated Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, is set to hit the CBS fall 2025 schedule, and fan excitement is at an all-time high. The new series follows Donnie Wahlberg as he reprises his beloved role as Detective Danny Reagan, who begins a new chapter with the Boston Police Department. While fans have long wondered whether other members of the Reagan family would join him, that question has finally been answered and the news couldn’t be better.

As production continues, Wahlberg took to Instagram on Friday to share a behind-the-scenes photo from the Boston Blue set. Standing beside him was none other than his on-screen sister, Bridget Moynahan. The New Kids on the Block co-founder revealed that Moynahan is returning to the franchise in a dual role: she will both direct an episode of Boston Blue and appear on screen as Erin Reagan, reuniting with Danny in Boston for a brief but meaningful visit.

The announcement delighted longtime fans, marking the first return of an original Blue Bloods cast member beyond Wahlberg himself. It’s been only about a year since Blue Bloods wrapped filming after a 14-season run, but the reunion already feels special. The Reagan family was known for being as close off-screen as they were on-screen, and Moynahan’s involvement offers hope that more familiar faces could follow.

While specific details about Erin Reagan’s storyline have not yet been revealed, speculation is already swirling. Perhaps Erin travels to Boston to check in on her brother or to share updates about her life following the events of the series finale. Whatever brings her there, seeing Moynahan and Wahlberg together again is sure to be a highlight for fans. And, of course, many are already wishing that Jamie Reagan might eventually join them.

Although Moynahan is the first original cast member confirmed to return, she isn’t the only Reagan making the move to Boston. Danny’s youngest son, Sean Reagan, will also be part of the new series. The role has been recast, with Mika Amonsen stepping in as Sean begins his own career as a Boston PD patrolman. Whether Danny’s older son Jack previously played by Tony Terraciano will appear remains unknown.

More details about Moynahan’s on-screen appearance and the episode she will direct are expected in the coming months. For now, fans have yet another reason to look forward to Boston Blue, which premieres Friday, October 17, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. Until then, all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods are available to stream on Paramount+.
