Donnie Wahlberg’s Major Request Could Jeopardize the Future of the Blue Bloods Spinoff

Donnie Wahlberg is officially returning to CBS in Boston Blue, the upcoming spin-off and spiritual successor to Blue Bloods. The series follows Danny Reagan as he relocates from New York City to Boston, likely continuing his work in law enforcement while stepping away from the rest of the Reagan family.

Though the show will acknowledge its roots, Boston Blue is being built as its own entity, featuring a brand-new cast that includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson.

A Controversial Goodbye

After 14 seasons, Blue Bloods concluded in December 2024 with the finale “End of Tour.” Despite strong ratings and a fiercely loyal audience, CBS opted not to renew the series even after the cast agreed to salary cuts to keep it alive. Tom Selleck, who portrayed family patriarch Frank Reagan, openly criticized the decision, calling the cancellation a mistake. Still, the network chose to close the chapter on one of its longest-running dramas and turn the page with Boston Blue.

Wahlberg’s Push for a Familiar Face

Behind the scenes, Wahlberg has reportedly advocated for Tom Selleck to appear in the new series. The request isn’t for a major role just the occasional cameo, born out of respect and their long-standing work relationship. Sources suggest Selleck is receptive to the idea.

Why Selleck’s Return Could Complicate the Spin-Off

While fans would undoubtedly welcome Frank Reagan’s return, having him appear too early could unintentionally overshadow Boston Blue’s new storyline and cast. The series already faces high expectations from viewers who are still frustrated by Blue Bloods’ cancellation. Featuring Selleck right away might blur the line between the new show and its predecessor, making it feel more like Blue Bloods Season 15 rather than a fresh start.

For Boston Blue to thrive, Danny Reagan needs the space to build his own identity apart from the Reagan family legacy. If the series allows him to do that, it can honor what came before while establishing something new and compelling for longtime fans.
