Even After Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck’s Jesse Stone Fans Are Hoping He Keeps One Last Promise

Before Blue Bloods premiered in 2010, Tom Selleck made it clear he didn’t want the series to interfere with his work on Jesse Stone. But despite that intention, the ninth film, Lost in Paradise, aired in 2015 just one year after Blue Bloods began and the franchise has been quiet ever since. Selleck even discussed plans for a tenth movie, yet it never came to fruition.

It’s a disappointment for fans, because the Jesse Stone films showcase a completely different side of Selleck. While Frank Reagan is a respected police commissioner surrounded by family, Jesse Stone is a lonely, troubled small-town sheriff battling alcoholism and personal demons. Seeing both roles unfold around the same time would’ve highlighted Selleck’s full emotional range.

The Franchise Stalled for Practical Reasons

The Jesse Stone series nearly ended earlier when CBS dropped it after eight installments due to low engagement among younger viewers. Determined to continue, Selleck sold the script for Lost in Paradise to Hallmark, which released the film in 2015. Even so, the ending didn’t feel like a true finale especially since Selleck was actively writing the next chapter.

So why wasn’t a tenth film made? The biggest hurdle was Selleck’s Blue Bloods schedule. With 18–22 episodes per season and his character central to every storyline, he had little free time. Filming Jesse Stone in Nova Scotia while working full time in New York made the logistics almost impossible. Trying to squeeze in another movie would have risked compromising its quality.

A New Jesse Stone Film Could Help Ease the End of Blue Bloods

Now that Blue Bloods is wrapping up, fans are holding out hope that Selleck will finally return to Jesse Stone and finish the story he intended to tell years ago. He already had a script in development, and Hallmark had shown interest in continuing the series. After nearly a decade without closure, viewers deserve a proper final chapter.

A new Jesse Stone movie wouldn’t erase the sting of Blue Bloods ending, but it would offer a welcome silver lining and deliver the long-awaited conclusion fans have been hoping for.
