Sad news: Sami Gayle, who played Frank Reagan’s niece on Blue Bloods, has passed away.

Blue Bloods may have ended, but Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan isn’t slowing down. On March 25, Wahlberg took to Instagram to share the first teaser for Boston Blue, the upcoming spinoff set to premiere on CBS this fall.

“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you to #BostonBlue!” he wrote, adding, “The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!”

In the new series, Danny now a former NYPD detective relocates from New York to Boston, where he teams up with a new partner to tackle crime across Massachusetts. According to the show’s official description, Danny will be paired with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent Boston law-enforcement family. Casting for Lena has yet to be announced.

It’s also still unknown whether other Blue Bloods stars will appear in the spinoff. The original series finale ended with Danny asking longtime partner Maria Baez out on a date, leaving fans hopeful that their storyline will continue in some form.

Reactions to the teaser poured in immediately, with many fans celebrating the new chapter and just as many still mourning the end of Blue Bloods.

Interestingly, Boston Blue wasn’t initially developed as a Blue Bloods spinoff. Deadline reports that the project originally centered on a Boston police family whose eldest daughter partners with a transfer from LAPD. Once producers realized the potential to extend the Blue Bloods universe, they approached Wahlberg about stepping into the role and ultimately transforming the transfer character into Danny Reagan.
