‘Boston Blue’ Bosses Break Down Sean Recast and Danny’s Love Life: “Long-Distance Love Is Real”

When Blue Bloods wrapped after 14 seasons, fans were left with big questions about the future of the Reagan family. The new spinoff, Boston Blue, led by Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan, brings some long-awaited answers starting with what happened between Danny and his longtime partner Maria Baez.

In the Blue Bloods finale, Danny finally took a leap and asked Baez out for pizza. In Boston Blue’s premiere, their relationship takes a major step forward: the two are shown in bed together, trading their signature banter, now with a romantic edge.

“We wanted to continue Danny Reagan’s story in real time and explore where he and Baez were after the finale,” says co-showrunner Brandon Margolis. Ramirez hasn’t officially signed on for additional episodes yet, but the show plans to keep their long-distance romance alive as the season unfolds.

In Boston, Danny is paired with Detective Lena Silver as he takes on a new position within the police department. The move keeps him close to his son Sean now portrayed by Mika Amonsen, who replaces Andrew Terraciano. After Sean is injured on the job, the recasting represents a new phase for both the character and the father-son relationship. Margolis says Amonsen brings “fresh energy” to the role.

Despite the new city and new faces, the series retains the tone and heart of Blue Bloods. Familiar characters appear throughout, including Bridget Moynahan’s Erin Reagan, who shows up in the premiere.

“We truly mean to expand the universe,” says co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier. “The Reagans are still out there, living their lives just as viewers remember.”

Family traditions remain a cornerstone of the series. Each episode features a Shabbat dinner, carrying on the spirit of connection that made Blue Bloods resonate for so many years. “It’s an organic way to continue the universe,” Sonnier explains. “Sitting around the table is how families connect—whether it’s the Reagans or the Silvers.”
