The premiere of Boston Blue, the highly anticipated Blue Bloods spinoff, finally answered one of the franchise’s biggest questions: Danny Reagan and Maria Baez are officially a couple.
Marisa Ramirez, who portrayed Detective Maria Baez for 11 seasons on Blue Bloods, made a surprise appearance in the series premiere, reuniting with Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan. Their opening scene together leaves no doubt that the longtime partners have taken their relationship to the next level.
The original Blue Bloods finale hinted at romance when Danny invited Baez out for pizza, but viewers were left wondering whether that moment would lead to something more. Boston Blue quickly confirms that it did.
Reflecting on the reveal, Ramirez joked, “I guess that pizza led to a series of dates,” acknowledging the fan-favorite pairing that had been years in the making.
Executive producer Brandon Sonnier said it was important for the new series to address the unanswered ending from Blue Bloods. Rather than revisiting how the romance began, the creative team chose to introduce Danny and Baez as an established couple, rewarding longtime viewers who had invested in their relationship.
The romance also benefits from the natural chemistry between Ramirez and Wahlberg, whose decade-long friendship helped make the transition from partners to romantic partners feel authentic.
While Danny has relocated to Boston to care for his son Sean, Baez remains with the NYPD, meaning the couple must now navigate a long-distance relationship. As Danny adjusts to working alongside his new partner, Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), maintaining his relationship with Baez becomes an important part of his new chapter.
Ramirez believes Danny and Baez are well-equipped to make the distance work.
“After more than a 10-year friendship, they can adjust and shift and see what happens,” she said. “I think they’re both mature enough to handle it.”
The show’s producers have confirmed that the challenges of a long-distance romance will continue to play a significant role throughout Boston Blue, giving fans another reason to follow Danny and Baez’s long-awaited love story.
