Donnie Wahlberg made sure the announcement of Boston Blue’s Season 2 renewal became an unforgettable moment for the cast.
Speaking with PEOPLE at the iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the 56-year-old actor revealed that he personally called each of his castmates to share the exciting news.
“I had the pleasure of calling all my castmates and telling them… that we were getting a season two,” Wahlberg said.
The reactions, he explained, were deeply emotional.
“Every cast member got tears in their eyes, every single one of them, and so did I,” he shared. “And when I called Jenny [McCarthy] and told her about that, we shared a nice cry.”
As both the star and an executive producer of the series, Wahlberg said he specifically asked to be the one to deliver the news.
“I’m an EP too, so I said as one of the EPs, I’d like to be the one to tell them. And everyone agreed,” he explained.
His wife, Jenny McCarthy, who accompanied him on the red carpet, laughed as she described how they celebrated together.
“Oh, we did. We just did a little jig,” McCarthy joked.
Wahlberg added with a smile, “We might have cried a little.”
The couple also expressed their excitement about attending the iHeartRadio Music Awards, especially with legendary acts like Salt-N-Pepa, TLC, and En Vogue set to perform.
“We’re always honored, always excited,” McCarthy said. “Especially as we get older, it’s nice to still be involved. He’s heavily involved in music, I’m still on TV, and we love iHeart. Knowing that Salt-N-Pepa, TLC, and En Vogue were performing? Come on!”
“Incredible. Incredible,” Wahlberg agreed.
The New Kids on the Block star reflected on his long history with the celebrated groups, noting that he’s shared the stage with all of them during his career.
“Oh my gosh. I’ve toured with all of them,” he said.
Wahlberg also praised the lasting influence those artists have had on the music industry, saying their contributions deserve greater recognition.
“These are iconic artists, and people forget what they all did in this industry. They had moments and long periods where they were really breaking down barriers and changing the game.”
He added that the event served as a reminder of their remarkable legacy.
“I think people forgot about the impact they had, and I think tonight is the start of them reminding everybody how awesome all those ladies were.”
